D.I.G. Contest #2 CLOSED
"How many 'Big Macs' can a T. rex Eat?"
Contest closed November 30, 1997
Gee. Nobody won this contest! Shame on you! All the answers were wrong.
We suppose you would like to know the correct answer. Right? Probably not. If you are like us, y'all just want to know if you won a prize. Get with it! This is supposed to be informative and educational, so you are stuck with us! We are gonna tell you the right answer whether you like it or not. So there.
There is a little bit more to it, though. In the movie of Jurassic Park, the characters refer to Velociraptors (which, in the movie, was a kind of imaginary dinosaur made up of parts of dinosaurs from a family called Dromaeosauridae -- which includes Velociraptor, Utahraptor, Dromaeosaurus, and Deinonychus) as "raptors" because it is easy to say and it is just plain kewl. A lot of paleontologists are upset about this because there is no real dinosaur called a "raptor" and a lot of folks go around calling all sorts of dinosaurs raptors. Sigh. There are dinos with "raptor" in their names: Velociraptor, Eoraptor, Oviraptor. These dinosaurs are not related, though. The "raptor" part means "thief" in Latin, so, for example, Oviraptor means "egg thief."
Another thing. There is no evidence that real dinosaurs hunted in "packs" like wolves. That was made up for the movie. It is an awesome idea, but unfortunately we do not have videos of real dinos going out for an afternoon of hunting. Work on those Time Machines, okay?
When you are playing with your kewl JP toys and having them eat your friends and your little brother/sister (only when they are annoying, right?) it is kewl to call them "raptors." But when you go to a museum and look at fossils, it is even more kewl to call them by their proper names like Velociraptor or Deinonychus. Okay? The museum guys will think you are way smart and maybe they will offer you a job. Your Mom and Dad will like that part, especially if you get paid.
Soooooooooooooo....
Here are the winners of the absolutely awesome 1 1/2 inch long dayglo plastic thingies that look sort of like dinosaurs, but are so anatomically innacurate that everybody here in the office just can't get over it! We gave an extra one to Kelly Milner Halls who writes our DinoTrekking column, and she hasn't talked to us since.
