  • US FlagOUT OF THE ROCK PALEO FESTIVAL: 2-5, March, 2000, Rockford, Illinois, United States
  • 2-5 March, 2000US Flag OUT OF THE ROCK PALEO FESTIVAL:Rockford, Illinois, United States
  • If you're interested in attending a talk by Bakker, visiting with him, or getting a book signed, he's a keynote speaker for the Out Of The Rock Paleo Festival (Burpee Museum of Natural History, 737 N. Main, Rockford, Illinois) planned for March 2-5 of 2000. Their tentative plan with Bakker is for three public talks - a talk on dinosaurs, a talk on tetrapods of the Late Paleozoic, and a dinner talk on dinosaurs.

Their tentative plan also includes Paul Sereno as the second keynote speaker with a pair of talks, as well as talks by Klaus Westphal, William Hammer, David Bardack, Tom Gunsberg, Virginia Naples, Gabrielle Lyon, Benjamin Waggoner, Peter Larson, Larry Martin, and a spectacular display and fossil chat with Mike Everhart of the famed Oceans of Kansas website.

Even more speakers are pending for this event, now in its second year, but visitors can expect at least 18 talks. Five of the talks will be suitable for families with children seven yrs. and up. With the exception of the dinner talks, prices for talks are stunningly inexpensive. Adults $5 and children (under 18) $4 for each talk. Members get a dollar off per talk.

A full schedule will be available soon, pre-registration is accepted and recommended - many of the talks sell out before the day of the event. Anyone interested in getting on the early mailing list can send a note by email to:

    • 15, March, 2000
Institute of Museum and Library Services grant money to pay for the Museum Assessment Program is going unclaimed.
Important Application Deadline: 15, March, 2000
Since Beth Merritt joined the Museum Assessment Program in July she has been working to improve the ways in which MAP addresses collections care in general, and natural history collections in particular. She is concerned to find that natural history museums are under-represented among those accessing Institute of Museum and Library Services grant money to pay for MAP. She wants to encourage you to apply for the March 15th , 2000 deadline for IMLS funding for MAP assessments. Over $100,000 in IMLS MAP funds went unused last year - enough to fund over 40 museums in the program. The grants are non-competitive, and the application is easy to fill out. Take advantage of this opportunity.

The MAP could help your museum address your concerns and improve your operations. For more information visit:

  • 15-18, March, 2000 FIRST SYMPOSIUM ON EUROPEAN DINOSAURS: Düsseldorf, Germany

  •

15-18, March, 2000 FIRST SYMPOSIUM ON EUROPEAN DINOSAURS:

This shall be the first meeting on the continent where dinosaurs were born, solely devoted to this topic. In the last two decates or so, the research on dinosaurs from all countries of Europe has seen a dramatic development: from the west coast of Portugal over Romania to Western Russia and from Spitzbergen to Italy new findings have been made.

There was not only a increase in dinosaur diversity, knowledge of the ecology of dinosaur populations, news on embryos, nesting- and egg-sites, some new findings presented absolutely new dinosaurs, which are of worldwide importance (for example Baryonyx, Pelecanimimus, Ampelosaurus). Some showed unusual well preserved details of the original body as Scipionyx or Pelecanimimus.

European Dinosaurs are documented well from both, the beginning and the end of this area: The famed Plateosaurus sites in France or Germany, the remains of the early predator Liliensternus are highlights of the beginning of the dinosaurian era and the Upper Cretaceous sites from Romania, Spain and France showing the decline of this species are of importance as well.

The First Symposium on European Dinosaurs tries to focus on all new aspects. It should serve as a platform for scientists and interested laymen. If you are interested in attending, please contact one of us and we will send you further information:

  • 29 April, 2000 US Flag DINOSAURS OF NEW MEXICO: Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States

  • 29, April, 2000, DINOSAURS OF NEW MEXICO:
The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNH) is pleased to announce the first "Dinosaurs of New Mexico" symposium, to be held at the NMMNH on Saturday, April 29, 2000. Talks and posters are tentatively scheduled to run from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

New Mexico is unique among western states in having a rich record of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous dinosaurs, and dinosaur body and trace fossils are known from most parts of the state. The history of dinosaur paleontology in New Mexico dates back more than 100 years and includes such famous paleontologists as E.D. Cope, Barnum Brown, C.W. Gilmore, F.v. Huene, E.H. Colbert, and C.H. Sternberg, among many others.

We solicit contributions on all aspects of dinosaur paleontology in New Mexico for a proceedings volume that will be published as a New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Bulletin. In addition to papers detailing original research on New Mexico's dinosaurs, the proceedings volume will include summary papers on Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous dinosaurs of New Mexico and a bibliography of New Mexico's dinosaurs spanning over 120 years of research. Papers will be due at the meeting. For additional information, including NMMNH Bulletin Instructions to Authors, contact:
