INTRODUCTION

Spring 2000

Not since our crass marketing of the Titantic Movie Video have we dared to present such a blatantly non-Dinosaur type item in the PrimePosition on the D.I.G. Frontpage.

Still unashamed and unrepentant, we offer this brand new attempt to separate our readers from their parents' hard earned money and at the very same time to raise money for more Paleontology stuff!

In case you have not been out from under your bed in a few weeks, let us tell you that the hottest thing between two book covers is Harry Potter. What? You haven't bought these books yet? Good! Buy them from D.I.G. right NOW! Just click in the appropriate place and tell those good Amazon people your credit card number. Go on. Go ahead. It doesn't hurt a bit.
(Does anybody know if J.K. Rowling J.K. Rowling. Press Photo Courtesy Access Indiana tlc.ai.org ever even heard of dinosaurs? And if she didn't, why not? What does Joanne have against dinosaurs anyway? How about: Harry Potter and the Dinosaur's Dinner. or Harry Potter and the Coprolite Conundrum or possibly Harry Potter and the Tyrannosaur's Tooth. We prefer the coprolite one.)

By the way, we have relented a little bit. Okay. Now they aren't dinosaurs exactly, but dragons are pretty close to dinosaurs. So we're giving Ms. Rowling two points in her favor.

February 20, 2001, ATLANTA, GA     Press Release

THE COCA-COLA COMPANY AND WARNER BROS. PICTURES
TO SHARE THE MAGICAL EXPERIENCE OF READING WITH
HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE

February 20, 2001, ATLANTA, GA - The Coca-Cola Company and Warner Bros. Pictures
are joining forces to celebrate and promote the magic and power of reading
through a multi-year agreement that kicks off with the release of the studio's
highly anticipated film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone*.

The two companies announced today that Coca-Cola has been named the sole global
marketing partner for both the motion picture, which debuts on November 16, and
the subsequent video release.  Through this relationship, The Coca-Cola Company
will combine its worldwide resources and geographic reach to bring the
specialness of Harry Potter and Coca-Cola to people and communities around the
world.

These efforts -- to be announced in the coming months -- will center on helping
people discover the magical world of their imaginations through reading while
reinforcing the core values and attributes shared by Harry Potter and Coca-Cola.
As part of the agreement, Coca-Cola will develop broad-based reading
initiatives in communities where it does business over the next several years.
Designed to tap into the passion that people have for Harry Potter, marketing
programs will encompass the flagship brand Coca-Cola and the "Kids Portfolio" of
The Minute Maid Company, including Hi-C and Minute Maid variety juice and juice
drinks.

"This important partnership with Warner Bros. and the release of Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone marks one of the largest global entertainment
initiatives ever undertaken by The Coca-Cola Company," said Steve Jones, Senior
Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, The Coca-Cola Company.  "Both Harry
Potter and Coca-Cola reach deep into the heart of local communities around the
world to add a little bit of magic to people's everyday lives.  Bringing the two
together creates a unique opportunity for us to develop programs that will not
only touch people emotionally, but allow us to directly impact their lives in a
tangible, meaningful way."

"It was tremendously important that we create a partnership that would have the
ability to globally support the power and magic of Harry Potter," said Brad
Ball, President, Domestic Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures.  "The Coca-Cola
Company recognized the wealth of possibilities inherent in this property for
engaging the world's adults and children."

Sue Kroll, President, International Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures said, "This
strategic relationship represents the first time a marketing alliance of this
magnitude, with such global impact and significance, will be employed by Warner
Bros.  We couldn't be more thrilled to bring together a world leader like
Coca-Cola and a worldwide phenomenon like Harry Potter."

Directed by Chris Columbus ("Mrs. Doubtfire"), the film stars Daniel Radcliffe
(BBC's "David Copperfield") as Harry Potter, the central character in a series
of books for children and adults alike that has swept the world.  Written by
British author J.K. Rowling, the books follow the adventures of Harry, an
orphaned boy who is invited to become a student at Hogwarts, a school of
witchcraft and wizardry.

"Coca-Cola celebrates and embraces the ideals promoted through the stories of
Harry Potter -- friendship, love, self reliance, the importance of family, the
magic of shared experiences, and the value of diversity," said Jan Hall, Senior
Vice President Consumer Marketing, Coca-Cola North America.  "Through brands
like Minute Maid and Coca-Cola, we are creating special initiatives that will
invite people to experience the magic of Harry Potter in their lives."

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone also stars newcomers Rupert Grint and Emma
Watson as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.  Also starring in the film are
Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Maggie Smith as Prof. McGonagall, Richard Harris as
Albus Dumbledore, Richard Griffiths as Uncle Vernon, Fiona Shaw as Aunt Petunia,
Ian Hart as Professor Quirrell and Alan Rickman as Professor Snape.  Production
is currently underway in England.

Steven gives it up!

Alas, alack! Steve Spielberg will not direct the Harry Potter Movie. It will be directed by Chris Columbus. There were other folks who wanted to do it including Terry Gilliam and Jonathan Demme. What would your first choice have been? Would it have been Chris Columbus? Now we have to wait about two years to see what he does with all this.

HARRY POTTER RIDE at Warner Brothers Studio Park in FLORIDA.

Bill Stout, Dinosaur Artist, to do the design!

Yes, famed dino guy Bill Stout, will design an awesome theme park ride for Harry Potter. We have no idea when it will open, but probably not for a year. Bill worked on designs for the movie and for toys for a while and now has moved on to the new project. He has also designed a Wizard of Oz theme park that will open in Kansas very soon!

Steven Spielberg: Jurassic Park III or Harry Potter?  Dinosaurs or Harry? Which will it be? Which will it be?
According to this article from the London Times (?)  it's... well, read it for yourself.

Spielberg to make Harry Potter film

STEVEN SPIELBERG has finally agreed to direct and produce the Hollywood
version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, J. K. Rowling's
successful tale of a schoolboy wizard.

A list of leading directors, including Robert Zemeckis, Jonathan Demme and Mike Newell, had been vying with Spielberg for the film.

Such was the competition for the job that Warner Bros, the studio which owns the rights, was able to dictate terms to Spielberg, insisting that it must be his next movie, so as to capitalise on the popularity of the novel and its two sequels.

Last month, Hollywood's most powerful director, who has been taking the
longest gap in his 30-year career, was given an exclusive look at the first draft of the Harry Potter script adaptation.

He spent Christmas at his home in the Hamptons weighing up whether to direct A. I, based on a story outline by the late Stanley Kubrick, a Tom Cruise project, Minority Report, or the Harry Potter film.

Now, despite the fact that A. I and Minority Report would be produced by his own studio, Dreamworks, Spielberg has opted to work for the rival studio, Warner Bros.

The decision means that the search is now on for a British schoolboy to play Harry Potter, although there are rumours that Spielberg favours a
computer-animated version.

Either way, the film is expected to cost between £80 million and £100
million to make.

J. K. Rowling, the Scottish author, wrote the first Harry Potter book in
cafés in Edinburgh while she was a single mother struggling to pay bills. The books have made her a multi-millionaire.

WEIRD STUFF
In the meanwhile, consider these conundrums!
  1. Can Harry deal with a Dinosaur?
  2. Can J.K. Rawling write a book with big paleo beasties?
  3. Where are the dinosaurs in the three current books?
  4. What will the next four books bring?
  5. Would we tell (even if we knew)? (Probably not, actually).
  6. Do dragons really count?
  7. What about the Harry Potter movie? Are there any dinosaurs in that?

While you are pondering ponderously, please perseveringly persue out all this amazing Harry Potter stuff. Brush up on four languages and braille. Every book you buy helps us to give you more dino articles. And, hey, maybe Ms. Rawling will get with the program here. Life is strange.
