Beyond
the Dinosaurs! : Sky Dragons, Sea Monsters, Mega-Mammals, and Other
PrehistoricBeasts
Book Description
Dinosaurs were not the only incredible creatures to live and rule Earth's
prehistoric past. Flying reptiles
filled the skies for 100 million years. Deadly marine reptiles, some over
50 feet long, swam and hunted
in the ancient oceans. And long after the extinction of the dinosaurs,
other astonishing reptiles and giant,
lethal mammals stalked the earth.
From the saber-toothed tiger, who makes our African lion seem like a kitten,
to the woolly mammoth,
whose tusks were large enough to swing from, to Diatryma, a massive 12-foot
flightless bird who could
hunt down small horses, to Quetzlocoatlus, with its wingspan as wide as
a small airplane's, this book
showcases the remarkable creatures that roamed the world along with --
and after -- the dinosaurs.
Beyond the Dinosaurs! is filled with over fifty full-color paintings of
these strange and fabulous beasts
by the world's top illustrators of prehistoric animals. It also contains
information about each animal,
exploring where and when it lived, what it ate, and its particular attributes.
Additionally, there is a listing
of the best sites to visit on the World Wide Web for more information about
these fantastic animals. It's
a treasure trove of information about some of the most astonishing creatures
that ever roamed our
world.

Book Description
Discover how dinosaurs evolved, how they looked, where they lived,
how they behaved, and why they died: the current state of knowledge
about the Monsters of the Mesozoic, complete in one volume.
Acclaimed dinosaur paleontologist and paleo-artist Gregory S. Paul conducts
this definitive tour through
the 140-million-year existence of the most exotic and interesting group
of animals ever to walk the
earth, assisted by the world's leading dinosaur experts.
Here you'll find remarkable stories about the first discoveries of dinosaur
fossils, the beginnings of
dinosaur paleontology, how the field has changed with modern technology,
the most sensational finds,
and the latest theories. You'll also explore the answers to such questions
as:
•Did dinosaurs have feathers?
• Did dinosaurs fly?
•Were the dinosaurs sluggish, cold-blooded reptilians, or something radically
different?
•What are the different dinosaur families, how were they named, and how
are they related?
•What was the dinosaurs' world like, and how did it change during their
reign?
•Are the birds of today the living descendants of predatory dinosaurs?
•How and why did the major dinosaur famihes become extinct?
Filled with spectacular full-color illustrations of dinosaurs in action,
plus black-and-white art and
graphics. The Scientific American Book of Dinosaurs features the latest
information from the field of
dinosaur paleontology, presented in a fascinating and accessible format.
You'll never think about dinosaurs the same way again!
About the Author
Gregory S. Paul is one of America's leading dinosaur paleontologists and
also a gifted artist. For his
anatomical accuracy, he is considered among his peers to be the "definitive"
paleo-artist. Paul has
worked on Disney's animated movie Dinosaur and was a consultant on the
motion picture Jurassic
Park. His published work includes dozens of scientific papers in magazines
and journals, and the books
Beyond Humanity, The Complete Illustrated Guide to Dinosaur Skeletons,
Predetory Dinosaurs
of the World, Dinosaurs of the Air: The Evolution and Loss of Flight in
the Mesozoic, and
Dinosaurs and Birds. Paul's illustrations have graced dozens of books,
periodicals, and televised
specials on the fabulous beasts. His art has also been exhibited in the
Smithsonian Institution's traveling
exhibit and has been displayed in ten natural history museums around the
world.
The New Dinosaurs
Here are dinosaurs as you've never seen them before in a dramatically expanded
new edition of the
book that started the renaissance in dinosaur books. Here are dinosaurs
that are swift, stunning, scary
and stupendous, presented in a lavish format. Using the latest paleontological
research, The New
Dinosaurs presents a scientifically accurate look at the way dinosaurs
lived: how they moved, ate,
dueled, drank and mated. From ten-ton brontosaurus to thirty-foot hadrosaurus,
here is a story more
fantastic than fantasy itself!
The Dinosaurs -- A Fantastic New View of a Lost Era, by William Stout,
with narration by the late
William Service, is considered to be a classic in illustrated naturalist
books. Featured in Life magazine,
it helped spark the worldwide interest in dinosaurs that culminated in
Jurrasic Park.
William Stout's prehistoric life murals are on permanent display at the
Houston Museum of Natural
Sciences and at Walt Disney's Animal Kingdom. William Service was the author
of Owl, which Time
magazine called, "one of the most elegant and perceptive pieces of natural
writing." Edited by Byron
Preiss.

"Dinosaur
Ghosts - The Mystery of Coelophysis" by J. Lynett Gillette, Doug Henderson,
Douglas Henderson
This is a very nicely done book about the Coelophysis discovery at Ghost Ranch. There are photographs (in color) of Edwin Colbert and his team. The paintings by Doug Henderson are outstanding. Ms. Gillette discusses a variety of scenarios that might account for the mass burial of these Triassic dinosaurs, leading the reader to "examine" and weigh the evidence for each scenario until finally the most likely explanation is arrived at. All in all, this is a welcome addition to any library collection for young people. -- Courtesy Dinosaur Mailing List
