CURRENT STATISTICS (and a description of the interpretation problems involved, updated 1/6/2001)

To the best of our knowledge the following statistics represent approximately 75-80% of the actual site traffic.

For various technical reasons we are unable to obtain statistics from our legacy website hosted at Interport.Net in New York City. We are, however, still receiving substantial numbers of hits from that URL. We are doing our very best to phase out these unmeasureable hits, but the URLs are present in many search engines and it will take some time before they vanish entirely. In the meanwhile, please allow that actual hits are approximately 20-25% more than what is shown here.

Important Notes:

June 2001
We are now able to consistently obtain statistics manually for approximately 80% of our magazine's readership traffic. Based upon six months of statistics we have averaged the statistics and supplied an accurate estimate (marked "e")  for the various statistics.  There are now totals for the first six months of 2001 which show that we are slightly and consistently ahead of last year's circulation. March 2001
Once again we're having difficulty retrieving out stats from the RCN servers. We've written to them constantly for weeks now, but still have gotten no response. We are able ocassionally to manually retrieve certain stats. Once we've built up enough of those, we may average them out for the missing weeks. We apologize again for this situation, but our hands are tied.

December 2000
We have recently moved to a new webserver. As a result, we are unable to supply certain statistics in the manner that we have for over three years. Hopefully, this situation will improve with time.
For this reason, you will be unable to obtain the "click through" statistics samples that have previously been available.

CIRCULATION

Our current circulation estimate is: 55,000+ readers / month.  (a/o April 2001)  We have been publishing The Dinosaur Interplanetary Gazette since July 1977. We average 3,416,662 site hits / year and 284,721 hits / month

Conventional paper magazines post circulation figures. This is difficult to determine for online magazines. We estimate our circulation as being approximately the same as the average of all monthly sessions. Naturally, there are some new and some old readers, so the actual circulation is probably larger than this number.  In addition, many readers print out the magazine and share it with friends. This increases circulation.

Circulation growth has been approximately 10% per month.

SEARCH ENGINE WORLDWIDE RANKING - TOP 2.5% IN THE WORLD

Based upon statistics from WebMostLinked.Com we are in the top 2.54% of 387,000 primary domains. WebMostLinked tracks the number of  links to major websites present in  Search Engines.

ADVERTISING BANNERS and CUMULATIVE HITS
 

These numbers represent a verifiable total of page top on-site advertising banners (ad-views) that were fully loaded. It does not include page bottom banners (which are usually also fully loaded). Multiply each figure by approximately 1.7 to get the total of fully loaded on-site advertising banners. The Dinosaur Interplanetary Gazette prides itself on having pages that not only load quickly, but also have content that makes readers go all the way to the bottom of each page.

Total Pages There are approximately 402 total pages in The Dinosaur Interplanetary Gazette

Auditing weeks run from 12:01 am Monday morning through 12:00 am Sunday evening. End of the month numbers are in bold to make visual comparison easier. Please remember that these "months" are in round weeks ending on a Sunday, regardless of the actual end of month date. Some months have 4 "weeks," some months have 5 "weeks" depending on when they begin and end.

Off-site Banners are counted by commercial servers that are not on our server. Sometimes, however, these servers go down, or the switchers don't work. Hence, they vary from week to week

Page Views We are gradually installing BCentral/LinkExchange on every page in the magazine: Eventually, the Off-Site Banners number will reflect the approximate number of page views. As of 1/99, these are installed on less than 200 pages, so they represent between 50-63% of actual page views.

Banner Ads Served:  We serve approximately 200,000+ ad banners per month. The Page View Number represents about 25% of actual Banner Ads Served. This is because the average page has 3-6 banner ads in various forms. For example, most pages carry a LinkExchange banner and an Amazon.Com banner for each of three different countries as well as a special topical ad and our own internal ads. Some have additional banners. Multiply the Page Views number by 4 to get a good estimate. Example: Page views = 8,000 x 4 = 32,000 Banner Ads Served.

In January 2000 we were able to access a new statistical package. Converstion to the new system is not complete, so the statistics are probably about 20% less than the actual number. For comparison purposes, however, they clearly show size and growth of access.

ISP StatsOur ISP (Internet Service Provider) has made certain stats available online 24 hours a day. Because our site is accessed through two different Domains (DNS), these numbers represent approximately 50% of our actual statistics. To get a good idea of true statistics, please multiply any number by 2. Also, a "Total Hit" number is listed above.  The main entry page (index.html) is not labeled as such, but the first unlabeled statistic is from that page.. Frontpage.html is the other major entry page for the site. A combination of those two pages gives a good indication of new visitors. However, we register individual pages in search engines, and some of them (eg. "Save The Lost World Now" which was a YAHOO Editor's Choice) have won awards in their own right: this means that many new visitors enter the site that way and not through the "front door."

On Site Counters and Trackers
For internal purpose only, we maintain a small number of off-site trackers and counters. They give us user information which is valuable for improving and targeting material. However, they DO NOT GIVE ACCURATE HIT COUNTS and should not be relied upon for that purpose. Why? Several reasons. They are off-site and sometimes the server for the counter is not functioning. In addition, we usually  put them at the bottom of the page for aesthetic reasons, and some counters don't load at all.
