Theodore's mother, Martha "Mittie" Bulloch is from a large,
rich family in Georgia: the South.
His father, Theodore "Thee" Roosevelt,
Sr. is from a wealthy family in New York City: the North.
Because her brothers serve in the Confederate
army of the South, Mittie has forbidden her husband to serve in the Union
Army of the North. She can't stand the idea of her own husband killing
her own brothers.
Thee, a fine, caring man who wants
to both serve and please his wife, establishes a charity. This charity
makes sure that soldiers at the battlefront send their paychecks home to
their families instead of wasting them on liquor and other temptations.
For this reason, Thee is often away
from home.
