Acknowledgments
Many people have contributed to this novel in one way or another. Some good, some bad. It is, I suppose, conventional to thank the people who helped the most, but sometimes that is hard to determine! With the passing of years, I am beginning to believe that as often as not, the people who help the most are those who try to do me the greatest harm. Without them, I question whether I would understand the nature of evil in the world. They will remain nameless here, but surely they all know who they are, and if some strange fate actually leads them to read this, I'd like them to know they are forgiven, and that from moment to moment, I have even felt flashes of gratitude.
On the good side of things, Judy-Lynn DelRey was one of the first people to believe in this story. And were she still here in body as well as in spirit, more people would have read this sooner. It was she who makes me think that this story has some value beyond my own hubris at wanting to share it.
Gary Kurtz believed, too. He quietly suffered with me through years of frustration.
Joyce Johnson forced herself to read a version of this years ago and offered some genuine smiles afterwards.
Carl Barks has been a spiritual "guru." I know he would, on one hand, hate that word, and on the other hand, relish it because it would include him (at age 95) as a modern spirit. I think of him, rather, as timeless, and it was his stories as much as anything I've ever read in my life that showed me what storytelling could be.
There are countless other people whose (to them) tiny displays of attention are (to me) huge exhibitions of love: (alphabetically) Ray Bradbury, Jay Cocks, Chip Delaney, Bernadette Fleur, Sam Grossman, Henry Holman, Michael Jablow, Cyndee Liss, Craig & Genny Miller, and I'm sure scores of people who will call me up irately and remind me. Thank heavens it is easy to update web pages!
Lately and most importantly, Judith Rodgers has miraculously managed to edit an aging manuscript while at the same time raising three exquisite kids and teaching in her spare moments! Her tired eyes and patience have kept this alive for me lately, and it is hard to imagine how to repay a gift like hers.
And if you've managed
to get this far, let me say, too, that this book is intended to be read
aloud. Perhaps in some later incarnation on the web, you will be able to
listen to it being read to you, but for the moment, please do this:
