Bear Bob's Story as told to Edward Summer |
Epilogue
True to her word, there came a day when the little girl was all better. Once again she came outside and ran and shouted under the sky. She passed me as I sat under a tree eating my lunch.
“Bear Bob! Bear Bob! Bear Bob!” she yelled to me as she ran by. She stuck out her tongue at me. “Bear Bob! Bear Bob!” And she skipped off down the road laughing.
Teddy stopped. He simply sat motionless on the blanket.
Teedie stared at him.
“What happened then, Teddy? What happened then?”
Teddy was quiet.
“Hmmmm,” he said in his old voice. “Hmmmmm. That, I think, is a story for another day.”
“Okay, Teddy. Okay.” Teedie’s eyes were very heavy. They fluttered and he lay back against the huge white pillows behind him.
Sleepily, he reached over and gently slipped his hand under Teddy’s arm. He pulled the bear close and cradled him against his shoulder.
Teddy nestled in. He began to sing gently. Teddy sang so softly, in fact, that only Teedie could hear.
"Now I lay you down to doze,
And pull the covers to your nose."
"Lulla-lee, Lulla-loo,
Little Teedie, I love you.""Slip you gently down in dreams
Wrapped up warm in soft moonbeams.
Rocka-lee, Rocka-loo,
Little Teedie, I love you."Teddy kissed Teedie upon the nose, and then Teedie was sound asleep.
But there had been another who had heard the story.
Mittie stood just outside the doorway. She had been listening quietly all along. She caught her breath as a small tear ran down her cheek.
Teddy looked up. He had heard the tiny sound.
He caught Mittie’s eyes and she his. The moment was like soft cotton wrapping the world in warm silence.
Their eyes held, enraptured, as they both listened to Teedie breathing softly.
