a new classic by Edward Summer |

Teddy's
brown glass eyes were bathed in light. They stared without blinking
into the brightness of the new day. Sunshine warmed his brown fur and his
black nose.
I certainly need a nap, Teddy thought. It's too bad that I have to keep my eyes open when I play stuffed.
Not wanting to attract attention, he rolled his head slightly to one side. "You okay?" he whispered into Dunkey's ear.
"Sure," Dunkey answered. "Just taking a siesta."
"Me, too. I think I can sleep now that I got most of my wish."
"Wish? What wish?" Dunkey asked.
Teddy was quiet for a moment. He looked up at Fred and Tony and Ginger and Douglas and Julia. Slowly, Teddy smiled.
Dunkey followed Teddy's gaze with his eyes. Slowly, he too, began to smile.
"You can't tell your wishes out loud," Teddy whispered, "or they won't come true."
"I know what you mean," Dunkey said, grinning broadly. He let his head fall lazily against Teddy's side. "Talk to you later."
"Mmmmm. Have a nice nap."
"Thanks," Dunkey yawned. Then he was quiet.
Smiling from ear to fuzzy ear, Teddy blinked the golden sun sparkles out
of his eyes and, eyes wide open, went back to sleep.
